JPMorgan Kinexys: Wall Street is moving onto blockchain rails.
First the plumbing, then the flood.
nicspics pulls back the curtain. The biggest bank in the U.S. ($4.9 trillion in assets as of Mar 31, 2026) is quietly moving money and funds onto blockchains, including open ones that anyone can look at. Here is what JPMorgan’s Kinexys is, what it has done lately, and why I think it shows where finance is heading over the next 5–10 years.
What Kinexys is Recent moves Canton Network Why it matters Big picture Words to know
Not financial advice. JPM Coin is for vetted J.P. Morgan institutional clients only. There is nothing here for you to buy, and any “JPMD” token offered to the public is not JPMorgan’s.
1. What Kinexys is
Kinexys by J.P. Morgan is the bank’s blockchain business unit. It used to be called Onyx. On Nov 6, 2024, JPMorgan renamed it Kinexys, and the older “JPM Coin” payment system became Kinexys Digital Payments. (J.P. Morgan, Nov 6, 2024 · CoinDesk)
Average daily transactions across Kinexys, per J.P. Morgan. (J.P. Morgan, Jun 29, 2026)
Transaction volume processed since the start. (same release)
Blockchain Deposit Accounts now cover USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, HKD, JPY, RMB and SGD. Payoneer and Japanese energy trader JERA Global Markets were among the first to use the new ones. (J.P. Morgan, Jun 29, 2026)
For scale: when it was renamed in Nov 2024, the platform had done more than $1.5 trillion in total, with over $2 billion a day. (Ledger Insights, Nov 6, 2024) In between, J.P. Morgan’s Apr 28, 2026 milestones post cited more than $3 trillion total and over $5 billion a day. (J.P. Morgan, Apr 28, 2026) So average daily volume has more than tripled in about 19 months.
JPM Coin (ticker JPMD) is a deposit token: a digital version of real U.S. dollars sitting in a J.P. Morgan bank account. JPMorgan says it is not a cryptocurrency or a stablecoin. Its institutional clients use it for payments, posting collateral and settling trades. (J.P. Morgan JPM Coin page)
2. Recent moves
- Nov 12, 2025, a bank dollar on a public chain: JPM Coin went live on Base, the public Ethereum layer-2 network built within Coinbase. J.P. Morgan’s headline: “First bank issues USD deposit token on a public blockchain.” B2C2, Coinbase and Mastercard completed test transactions. (J.P. Morgan, Nov 12, 2025)
- Dec 15, 2025, a tokenized fund on Ethereum: J.P. Morgan Asset Management launched MONY, its first tokenized money market fund, on public Ethereum. It is powered by Kinexys Digital Assets and only open to qualified investors. (J.P. Morgan AM, Dec 15, 2025)
- Jan 7, 2026, a second chain: Kinexys and Digital Asset announced plans to issue JPM Coin natively on the Canton Network, a privacy-focused blockchain, in phases through 2026. The first phase is building the technical and business framework for issuing, moving and redeeming JPMD on Canton. As of Oct 11, 2026, I could not find a J.P. Morgan announcement saying JPMD is live on Canton, so treat it as announced and in progress. (joint press release, Jan 7, 2026) More on Canton below.
- May 13, 2026, fund number two: JLTXX, a U.S.-registered government money market fund on Ethereum, built to support stablecoin issuers under the GENIUS Act. J.P. Morgan AM put in $100 million at launch, and Anchorage Digital also took part. (J.P. Morgan AM, May 13, 2026 · Kinexys, May 14, 2026)
- Jun 29, 2026, more currencies: five Asia-Pacific currencies were added to the Blockchain Deposit Accounts (see above). (J.P. Morgan)
3. Canton Network and Canton Coin (CC)
What it is: the Canton Network is a blockchain built for regulated finance, created by the firm Digital Asset. Its pitch is privacy: each transaction is only visible to the parties in it, while the network still settles across apps in one step. It is governed by the Canton Foundation, and its native token is Canton Coin (CC). (DTCC release, Dec 17, 2025 · canton.network)
Who is on it (verified)
- DTCC, the firm behind U.S. securities settlement, partnered with Digital Asset on Dec 17, 2025 to mint a subset of DTC-custodied U.S. Treasuries on Canton, and joined the Canton Foundation as co-chair alongside Euroclear. (DTCC, Dec 17, 2025)
- July 2026: DTCC completed live production trades with tokenized Treasuries, equities and ETFs (collateral, intraday repo, securities lending, margin), with 30+ market participants. BNP Paribas says it was the lender in an intraday securities-lending trade over its own Canton node. (Canton, Sep 8, 2026)
- October 2026: DTCC’s Tokenization Service is due to launch this month, with Canton as one of its networks. (The Block, Oct 8, 2026) As of Oct 11, 2026 I treat it as scheduled, not live.
- J.P. Morgan: the Kinexys plan to issue JPM Coin natively on Canton (Jan 7, 2026, see above). Canton’s own blog also lists HSBC, J.P. Morgan, Lloyds and LSEG as pursuing tokenized deposits for settlement across Canton. (Canton, Sep 8, 2026)
- Backers: The Block describes Canton as supported by Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Börse, BNY and others. Digital Asset raised $135 million in June 2025 in a round led by DRW Venture Capital and Tradeweb. (The Block, Jan 7, 2026)
How big
Tokenized real-world-asset volume Canton says it processes. This is Canton’s own figure, not an independent count. (Canton, as of Sep 8, 2026)
Assets held in DTC custody. When the Tokenization Service launches, “a portion” of them can be used onchain across Canton. (Canton, Sep 8, 2026 · The Block, Oct 8, 2026)
Canton Coin (CC) facts
| Item | Fact | Source, as of |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Native utility token. Users pay network fees in CC, and those fees are burned. Validators, Super Validators and app builders mint new CC as rewards for real activity (“burn-and-mint”). | Canton docs, Oct 11, 2026 |
| Launch allocation | No pre-mine and no VC allocation, per Canton. | canton.network, Oct 11, 2026 |
| Supply design | At steady state, up to 2.5 billion CC can be minted per year; supply is not fixed, it moves with usage. | Canton Coin white paper |
| Price / market cap | About $0.124 · about $4.95 billion (as of Oct 13, 2026; prices move fast) | CoinGecko, Oct 13, 2026, ~10:48 PM ET |
| Circulating supply | About 39.8 billion CC | CoinGecko, Oct 13, 2026 |
| All-time high | About $0.194, on Feb 2, 2026 (ET). On Oct 13, 2026 the price was about 36% below it. | CoinGecko, Oct 13, 2026 |
The honest caveat: Canton is “public” in the sense that institutions can join one shared network, but transactions are private by default. You cannot browse a bank’s Canton trades the way you can browse JPMD on BaseScan. What Canton does publish is its reward distributions and Canton Coin fees. (canton.network) So the curtain is half open: you can see that the rails are being used, not who is moving what.
CC is a volatile crypto asset, and it is a different thing from JPM Coin. Not financial advice.
4. Why it matters
- Banks are adopting the rails, not fighting them. JPMorgan is not alone. On Sep 1, 2026, 21 big financial institutions (including Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Fidelity, Deutsche Bank, UBS and MUFG) said they plan to set up a joint stablecoin company, starting with a USD stablecoin, and aim to go to market in the first half of 2027. (joint release, Sep 1, 2026) My read: banks are doing this to stay relevant as money moves to 24/7 internet rails.
- It ties into tokenization. Funds like MONY and JLTXX are tokenized real-world assets. You can track how big this market is getting, chain by chain, on rwa.xyz.
- And into stablecoins. The GENIUS Act, signed July 18, 2025, set the first U.S. rules for payment stablecoins. (White House fact sheet) Regulators are still finishing the detailed rules. (OCC bulletin 2026-3)
You can watch it onchain. This is the curtain being pulled back. JPMorgan publishes the JPM Coin contract on Base, so anyone can open the block explorer and see the token and its transfers: JPMD on BaseScan (contract 0x7e0A…6B82, linked from J.P. Morgan’s own FAQ). JPMorgan warns that tokens with the same or a similar name at other addresses are not affiliated with it. The fund tokens are public too, at the addresses J.P. Morgan AM published: MONY 0x6a7c…bD46 (Etherscan) and JLTXX 0x0986…7bD8 (Etherscan).
When the largest U.S. bank puts dollars and funds on open blockchains, that is a strong hint about what finance looks like in 5–10 years. Smart money tends to move quietly, but on a public chain you can follow it.
5. The big picture: where the money sits, and where it could move
A thesis, not a prediction. Today most of the world’s wealth sits in three places: property, stocks and gold. The idea I keep coming back to: as banks, DTCC and fund managers put assets and dollars on blockchain rails, some of that liquidity and market share may migrate toward crypto rails, both native assets like BTC, ETH and SOL and tokenized versions of the old assets. Nobody knows how much, or how fast.
| Market | Size | Source, as of |
|---|---|---|
| Global real estate | $393.3 trillion | Savills, values at start of 2025 |
| Global listed stocks | $157.8 trillion | SIFMA Fact Book 2026, end of 2025 |
| All above-ground gold | about $31 trillion | World Gold Council, end of 2025 |
| All crypto | about $2.8 trillion (BTC ~$1.68T, ETH ~$306B, SOL ~$63B) | CoinGecko, Oct 13, 2026, ~10:48 PM ET |
| Tokenized real-world assets | $39.1 billion | rwa.xyz, Oct 13, 2026 |
Put side by side, crypto is about 0.5% (one two-hundredth) of what those three markets add up to ($2.8T of about $582.1T), and tokenized real-world assets are a rounding error next to DTC’s $114 trillion in custody. That gap is the whole point: the rails are being laid now, while the volume is still small. If even a sliver of the big pools moves onto them, it is visible onchain. If it doesn’t, the table will show that too.
Opinion. Prices and market sizes change daily. Not financial advice.
6. Words to know
- TradFi: traditional finance, meaning banks, brokers and fund managers.
- Deposit token: a bank deposit recorded as a token on a blockchain. It is still a deposit at that bank.
- Stablecoin: a token designed to hold a steady value, usually $1, backed by reserves.
- Public blockchain: an open network (like Ethereum or Base) whose ledger anyone can read.
- Layer 2 (L2): a faster, cheaper network that settles back to a main chain like Ethereum. Base is one.
- Tokenization: recording a real asset (like a fund share or bond) as a token on a blockchain.
- Canton Network: a blockchain built by Digital Asset for banks and market infrastructure, where transactions are private by default but settle on one shared network.
- Canton Coin (CC): the Canton Network’s native token, used to pay network fees (which are burned) and minted as rewards for running and using the network.
- DTCC: the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, the company behind settlement and custody of most U.S. securities.
- Block explorer: a website (like BaseScan or Etherscan) where you can look up any onchain token, wallet or transaction.
